How to create and optimize a business listing on InYourArea
As a small business owner, it’s imperative to get your brand out there as much as possible in order to attract new business.
This will inevitably include online business listings and directories of some sort.
Unfortunately, there are so many choices that there just isn’t enough time in-universe to list them all!
Something good. Some bad. And certainly a little ugly.
Below is an example of what you would typically expect to find in an online business directory listing these days;

So, without further ado, let’s get started with setting up and optimizing your business directory listing.

Section 1 – Account Information

It’s pretty self-explanatory why we need this information, but ultimately it’s so that we can contact you if necessary.
Section 2 – Payment of £99 for 12 months

We did a lot of research on this section mainly because many online business directories ask for payment at the end of the process.

Section 3 – Company Information
(8-10 mins to do)
This part takes a little longer than the other parts simply because there is a lot more information required. If however, you have all the details in front of you, it will only take 8-10 minutes.
Be careful, none of the details you have provided so far will be seen or displayed on your ad.
Some details to note in the example above:
business address – There are three important reasons why we need your business address.
1. So our users know where you are. Very important if potential customers are to come to your premises that is to say if you are a hotel or a store or a yoga class for example.
2. The second reason is that we display a Google map on your profile page which again shows your location to potential customers. Please see below for an example:

3. And the 3rd – and the most important reason why we need your address – is that your company’s postal code defines the radius of your ad. You can read more about how the radius works later in this article.
We certainly appreciate that there are certain circumstances where you might not want/need to have your address made public. For these instances, you can simply check the box below indicating: I do not want to display my address on my ad.
Professional email address – This is the email address on which you want potential customers to contact you. This will be displayed on InYourArea for users to see.
Quick advice: It is advisable to use a proper “work” email address rather than your personal Gmail/Hotmail account. It looks more professional and can often be obtained for free through your website/domain provider. It’s definitely worth it, as it also adds an element of reliability to your listing.
Business phone number – Please note, we suggest this is a landline number. Again, this adds authority and reliability to your ad. If you only have a mobile, so feel free to add it here. Any number is better than no number.
Your company logo or photo that represents your service – very self-explanatory, but something to note is the aspect ratio.
The ideal size is 600 pixels wide by 350 pixels high, or an aspect ratio of 3:2. Opting for more landscape than portrait is advised.

Image 1: This logo is well suited
The key thing to remember here is that the yellow shows the outline of what your logo/image will look like when displayed live on the site.
But never fear, as we are always on hand to offer you all the help and advice we can when it comes to uploading the correct sized image. And also… Once downloaded, we can always help you change the image later if you are not 100% satisfied.
*Note – using an image of your work or a ‘concept’ image also works great.
Your services – This is where you select what your business does so anyone searching InYourArea can easily find it. We allow you to add a main category and then 3 subcategories.
You can always add more, but 3 is what we found optimal.
When ‘describing the services you offer‘ we always suggest offering as much information as possible to help potential customers really understand what you can offer them. That’s why we set the character limit to 1000.
Website Links – This is where you can enter all your information online that is to say your website, your Facebook page and your Checkatrade page.
This is a huge plus because most online business directories don’t allow you to have that many “outbound” links on a listing. But we know that the more information you can give a prospect, the more likely they are to decide to do business with you.
Point: Be sure to include the https:// at the beginning of any URL you place here.

Opening hours – it’s very obvious so I’m not going to spend a lot of time on it.
My only advice here is that if you are an online business that operates 24/7, you can just select “24 hours” for all days of the week.
You can also check the box that says “I don’t want to show my opening hours on my listing”.
Article 4 – Location
(1 min to do)
This section allows you to enter the area in which you want your ad to be displayed. Which will generally be the area in which your business operates.
But keep in mind that you don’t have to target the area in which you live or work. You can target any region of the UK.
As you can see in the image above, the shaded area corresponds to the radius in which your ad will appear.
Simply put… All InYourArea users in this gray area will be exposed to your business listing.
Once you’re happy with your selection, you can click Save and Submit.
And that’s all!
You have just created your directory listing.
All submissions are manually approved and can take up to 24 hours, but over 90% of the time it’s within hours.
