Discovering great Black-owned businesses in Canada is easier than ever with a new national online directory and e-commerce marketplace.

The Black Business Association of BC (BBABC) launched Black Biz Global on February 1 to mark the start of Black History Month. The National Black-Owned Business Directory was created to support Black Canadian-owned businesses with their global business visibility.

“Everything we develop and build in the BBABC is based on the current and future operational needs of our business community,” said Nerissa Allen, co-founder and president of BBABC. “Where are the gaps, where are the supports needed, and how can we meet those needs with maximum impact?” Businesses today need what I like to call “virtual commercial real estate” and that’s what we provide.

Black Biz Global was developed in partnership with Indigenous web design firm Longhouse Media and serves as an online directory and marketplace for consumers, other businesses and government.

The platform currently offers over 400 ads, with more being added every day. Black-owned businesses can register for free to receive their directory listing and there is an option to upgrade to a paid membership plan to sell products.

Visitors can insert their location on the site to find nearby restaurants, hair salons, body shops and more.

“We understand the challenge of trying to maintain an online presence as a small business or solopreneur, and we wanted to increase value beyond a traditional directory,” Allen said in a statement. “By providing a platform where companies can also sell their products and advertise their services, we can offer them a virtual retail space. The lack of this is often a small business killer.

“Any Black-owned business across Canada can be listed on our platform. Whether it’s Nunavut Wellness Spa in Iqaluit, Northern Territories, or Tommies Jerk in Surrey, BC, we’ve created a space for them to be seen.

Nerissa Allen, co-founder and president of the BBABC./Submitted

Allen laid the groundwork for BBABC a few years ago when she started showcasing local businesses on a grassroots community Instagram page. The association officially registered as a non-profit organization in July 2020 following two major events.

“Our business was closed for three months due to COVID restrictions and we were also living through the trauma as a community of the murder of George Floyd,” explained Allen, a mother and entrepreneur. “Feeling helpless and looking for a way to turn that pain and trauma into something uplifting and community-building was the driving force to save the organization and take it to another level.

“We wanted to give hope to ourselves and the community, and we thought the way to make a difference was to build economic strength within the community. Help keep businesses afloat during the pandemic.

BBABC supports over 500 businesses across Canada in a variety of sectors, such as hospitality, engineering, tourism, arts, health and beauty, and more. The association has also organized partnerships with Climate Smart and Buy Social Canada to encourage and advance positive climate action and social value.

“We will continue to raise the bar and push for excellence in our business community,” Allen said. “We will continue to demonstrate leadership and commitment to social good and environmental sustainability through the design of our workplace, the programs we develop and the actions we take every day.

WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will allow users to search for nearby businesses directly from the app. Users will see an area with subcategories like Photographs, Movies, and Documents while searching for something on the app. A second part will present the neighboring businesses such as restaurants, grocery stores and other services.

The “Business Directory” feature was first reported by WABetaInfo when it was made available to some users in So Paulo, Brazil, and is expected to be made available to more users in other locations in the near future. Users will benefit from the feature as it allows them to search for local businesses and then contact them directly through the app.

This feature is most likely intended to facilitate purchases through WhatsApp, which already has its own payment mechanism through UPI in places like India. Users will be able to search for nearby stores, restaurants and other businesses, communicate with their respective WhatsApp Business accounts, choose from a catalog of products and services, and pay directly from the app, all without ever leaving WhatsApp.

The feature is still not available in Pakistan and there are currently no estimates of its availability. More information on planned additions, such as new business directory functionality, should be available in early 2022.

A new resource from the Guelph Black Heritage Society will promote local businesses owned by Black, Indigenous and people of color and help amplify their voices, the group’s president said.

The company has launched the Viola Desmond BIPOC Business Directory and President and Treasurer Denise Francis says she hopes it will inspire people to shop locally.

She said the company has heard from people, especially newcomers to Guelph, Wellington County and Waterloo Region, saying they want to support local businesses but don’t know where to start.

“People were asking us for referrals: do you know a hairdresser, do you know this person or do you know this person? and we want to help enhance that long-term success of our local BIPOC-owned and operated businesses,” Francis said in an interview with CBC News.

The directory lists businesses beyond the local area, however.

“When we started to spread the word about the launch of this project, we were amazed that people wanted to be included from afar and not just in our little area of Guelph-Wellington,” she said.

Francis said it was also important for them to keep the directory free for the community to use and for people to list their businesses. She said there’s often a fee to list your business on these types of directories.

“We felt it was necessary to help promote our community and amplify our voices and our businesses, we had to try and do it as a service. And that’s why there is no charge for organizations who wish to register with us,” she said.

Named for a civil rights activist

The directory is named after Viola Desmond, who many people know as a civil rights activist and whose face is on the $10 bill.

But Francis said they chose Desmond because she was also a business owner. She was a beautician and mentored other young black women through her Desmond School of Beauty Culture.

“She was a trailblazer in a lot of ways and that’s why we thought it was also, you know, not just to honor her, but also to try to spread her story a bit more because she was before quite a businesswoman. And that’s why we thought it would be a good connection,” Francis said.

The company also received permission from the Desmond family to use the name in the business directory.

Other initiatives

Kween, executive director of the heritage society and coordinator of social justice initiatives, said in a press release on the directory that it was an “opportunity for the world’s majority to have access to their own promotion. and its visibility.

Kween added, “It helps amplify our voice, our message and it’s completely free. So, in the words of Viola Desmond, ‘It’s for you.'”

Francis said she hopes the whole community embraces this project and others the company has undertaken, including the Change Starts Now educational initiative and the Flora Francis Memorial Library of Black Literature, which launched earlier in the year. the year and is located in the society’s Heritage Hall. at 83 Essex Street in Guelph.

“Last year the world changed and the whole kind of Black Lives Matter movement, it wasn’t just a movement for us. It’s our lives and we have to try to continue in people’s consciousness of justice initiatives social and other projects we are working on,” she said.

“I want people to continue to support the Guelph Black Heritage Society, our programs and our activities and let us know what other services they are looking for because they want to work together and really try to be a community organization this is not just for the black community, but for the community,” Francis said.

A new free Blue Mountains business directory, funded by bushfire resilience grants, will feature more than 5,500 businesses in the region.

The BusinessBM.com.au business directory was created as part of the more than $600,000 bushfire grants funded by the Blue Mountains Business Community Resilience Project, which focuses on the creation of resilient business communities in the 26 mountain towns.

Excited about a new business directory: Meagan Witton of Faulconbridge runs Miss Figgy Grazing Boards, a catering business that supports local farmers, bakers, butchers, cheese makers and vendors with her bespoke grazing boards.

The project is a collaboration between corporate2community (C2C), a leader in disaster resilience of business communities, and BusinessBM, the new business network in the region.

BusinessBM director and spokesperson Lawrence Atkinson said the directory would help businesses connect with each other and improve their visibility and accessibility to new residents looking for key services.

“This project is essentially about keeping Blue Mountains businesses going,” Atkinson said.

“We want to build a strong and resilient local economy, and the best way to do that is to come together as a business community. By working with each other, we can thrive not only as individual businesses, but also as a regional community. “

Faulconbridge owner Meagan Witton jumped at the chance to sign up for the new directory.

“We launched our Miss Figgy Grazing Boards business last October when the last batch of lockdowns was completed,” Ms Witton said. “We’ve been creating pasture boards for our friends and family for a few years. It was really a side hobby, and last year we decided to dive in and start our business. It just took off. “

Ms Witton said the directory would be popular with other business owners and operators who have struggled after the fires and during the pandemic.

“A local business directory makes it much easier for us to reach potential new customers and also connect with local suppliers,” she said.

Corporate2community director Renae Hanvin said the directory is part of a series of grantmaking initiatives that underpin the project’s goal of building disaster preparedness and resilience in the Blue Mountains.

“We know that local businesses are the backbone of regional communities, and when they start working together and sharing knowledge, powerful change happens and everyone in the community benefits,” said Ms. Hanvin. .

In addition to the directory, the BusinessBM.com.au website has links and resources for mountain businesses covering resilience, mental health and wellbeing, and networking. It will help business owners establish their own local networks.

Meanwhile, the state’s leading business organisation, Business NSW, believes a new hardship panel set by the NSW Government to consider financial support for small businesses will be adopted by businesses across the state. The panel will consider on a case-by-case basis which companies are not eligible for any of the hardship packages currently on offer.

WhatsApp is piloting a new feature that lists local small businesses in a searchable directory for users looking for local businesses and services.

In a Tweet last week, WhatsApp chief Will Cathcart announcement that the company is piloting a new business directory feature that allows users to find local stores and services on the app. The pilot program is expected to begin experimental launch in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Related | WhatsApp will soon allow you to hide your online status from certain contacts

The announcement posts screenshots of the upcoming directory, which show how WhatsApp will sort ” Shops nearby “ by category. As mentioned in a recent Reuters report, the company will list thousands of businesses in the Brazilian capital – the first time WhatsApp has offered users a way to search for local businesses in its app.

In recent years, the Facebook-owned messaging service has seen significant growth in the popularity of its business account service, with WhatsApp Business accounts reaching 175 million daily users globally last year.

Since launching the standalone app in 2018, the messaging company has increasingly refined the experience, expanding support for product catalogs, shopping carts, and even in-app payments in select countries.

However, the growth of the service has also led to the controversial and much-criticised update to the privacy policy earlier this year, where the updates were interpreted as pulling information from peer-to-peer discussions on the app, by opposition to conversations with companies.

It is probably in the light of these events that Cathcart States in the announcement that WhatsApp does not record users’ location or the businesses they browse when using the new directory feature.

The pilot program is currently limited to the city of Sao Paulo in Brazil – although the company says India and Indonesia could be the next potential candidates for future expansion of the feature.

WhatsApp has started testing a new feature in São Paulo, Brazil, which allows its users to discover local businesses without having to leave the confines of the popular messaging platform.

Reuters reports that WhatsApp plans to highlight “thousands of businesses in categories such as food, retail and local services in selected neighborhoods of São Paulo” and that the Vice President of Business Messaging of Facebook’s Matt Idema said India and Indonesia could get the next feature.

“I am delighted that we are starting to pilot a directory of local businesses within @WhatsApp“said Will Cathcart, CEO of WhatsApp, in a Tweeter referencing the Reuters report. “It will help you find and connect with local businesses, like your neighborhood cafe, florist, clothing store and more.”

WhatsApp hasn’t been shy about wanting to attract more businesses. He created the WhatsApp Business API to offer “a better way to connect with customers”, for example, and the WhatsApp Business app purportedly “allows you to personally connect with your customers, showcase your products and services and answer their questions throughout their buying experience.”

But the expansion to include more business-to-consumer interactions has not been without its downsides. The most controversial move was a change to WhatsApp’s privacy policy intended to allow Facebook to retain information about conversations between businesses and consumers.

Recommended by our editors

To say that the introduction of this new policy went badly would be an understatement. Many users of the platform were concerned that Facebook wanted to access their private conversations, and even if that was not the case, the German privacy regulator also objected to the new policy. After threatening to limit account functionality for those who did not agree to the new privacy policy, he backtracked in May.

WhatsApp, the popular messaging service, has just launched WhatsApp Business Directory as part of efforts to foster the development of e-commerce services on Facebook.

Will Cathcart, head of WhatsApp at Facebook, took to Twitter to announce a pilot of the service in So Paulo, Brazil, a city he said is “home to millions of small businesses”. Cathcart said the in-app service will “help you find and connect with local businesses, like your neighborhood coffee shop, florist, clothing store and more.” In other words, it’s a bit like app-based yellow pages.

Playing catch-up: WhatsApp continues its efforts to expand its service base in the WeChat model. Will it ever get there?
(Source: Dimitri Karastelev on Unsplash)

He also said WhatsApp “will consider expanding this service to other cities and other types of businesses available on WhatsApp” based on feedback from service users over the next few months.

Matt Idema, vice president of business messaging at Facebook, told Reuters that India and Indonesia were likely candidate markets for the new feature. No doubt aware of recent criticisms of user privacy, Cathcart also claimed that WhatsApp has “built this privately: don’t log your location or the businesses you browse”.

Set to work

Essentially, the new feature makes it possible to search for businesses in its app for the first time. Idema said it could be “the main way people start a commerce process in WhatsApp”. WhatsApp, unlike Facebook and Instagram, does not serve ads in its app. Idema told Reuters that companies promote their WhatsApp numbers on packaging or websites or use Facebook ads to get users to chat on WhatsApp.

Facebook previously said it would focus on building e-commerce features to expand beyond its advertising business. At this year’s F8 Refresh developer event in June, the social media giant showed off a bunch of new updates designed to extend the usability of Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp as business channels.

For example, he announced new updates to WhatsApp Business which he says will “make it easier for businesses to start using the WhatsApp Business API and for people to easily chat with those businesses.”

In June, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook’s Shops feature would be extended to WhatsApp in several countries. In recent years, WhatsApp has also launched shopping tools such as product catalogs and shopping carts.

In October last year, WhatsApp said more than 175 million people message a WhatsApp Business account every day. “Our research shows that people prefer to message a business for help and are more likely to make a purchase when they can,” the company said.

WhatsApp is piloting a new business directory in São Paulo, Brazil, which allows users to find local stores and services on the app, the service manager said. Will Cathcart announced. The screenshots show how WhatsApp will display businesses sorted by categories such as “grocery store” and “restaurant”, before allowing users to chat directly with them. Reuters reports that the test will include thousands of businesses in the city.

Although the Facebook-owned messaging service is best known as a person-to-person messaging service, e-commerce has become an increasingly important part of its offering in recent years. Last October, WhatsApp reported that more than 175 million people around the world used the service to message a WhatsApp business account every day.

WhatsApp has offered a standalone app for small businesses since 2018, and since then has added features like support for product catalogs and shopping carts. In Brazil and India, it has also started offering in-app payments, allowing users to make purchases directly from businesses, in addition to sending money to friends and family.

But this e-commerce push created problems for WhatsApp earlier this year when it updated its privacy policy. The changes were widely interpreted as giving WhatsApp the ability to share people’s personal chat data with Facebook, when in fact the changes only applied to chats with businesses, which can see the data stored on Facebook servers. The new policy sparked an uproar, with WhatsApp’s competitors Telegram and Signal reporting an increase in new users in response.

Catcart said WhatsApp does not save users’ location or the businesses they browse when using the new directory feature.

In addition to its app for small businesses, WhatsApp also offers a WhatsApp Business API to connect large businesses with customers. It’s notable for being one of the few ways to directly monetize WhatsApp, as it currently doesn’t display ads like Facebook and Instagram. Although WhatsApp backed away from immediate plans to run in-app ads last year, Facebook vice president of business messaging Matt Idema said Reuters that “in the long run” he expects ads to be part of WhatsApp’s business model “in one form or another”.

Although the pilot is limited to one city in Brazil for now, Idema said India and Indonesia are among the candidates for expansion in the future.
