SALT LAKE CITY – A directory of women-owned businesses is looking to expand its current database and give money to those who help do just that. The Women’s Business Center of Utah (WBCUtah) has announced it is awarding five $1,000 grants to women-owned and operated small businesses that have helped grow Utah’s Women-Owned Business Directory over the course of of the month of February. A grant will be awarded, in particular, to a company in northern Utah.

According to WBCUtah, the grant money was provided by the Nasdaq Foundation to benefit women who will invest their money where it will be most useful in their businesses.

“A grant is a great way to accelerate the growth and use of the Utah Women’s Business Directory,” said Ann Marie Wallace, state director of the Women’s Business Center of Utah, in a statement. “Not only will our communities have a more comprehensive database to search and find women-owned products and services, but it will also become easier to intentionally support women-led businesses.

“Everyone can search the vast directory for their next meal, gift, service or supplier. And, as a bonus, five female owners will receive cash to invest in their business however they choose.

The Utah Women-Owned Business Directory is a free searchable database of Utah businesses owned and operated by women. Currently, 32 women-owned businesses are listed in Cache County, four in Box Elder County, and none in Rich County in the directory. The organization hopes to grow the directory to 5,000 listings by early May.

WBCUtah will randomly select four eligible applications as grant recipients, each from one of four different Utah regions – North, South, East, and Wasatch Front – and one additional application statewide, for a total of five grants.

To participate in the grant program, a business must be owned by a woman (or someone who identifies as a woman) and do the following by February 28:

  1. Get Listed in Utah’s Free Woman-Owned Business Directory

  2. Enter the WBCUtah Grant Competition

  3. For bonus entries, like the WBCUtah Facebook page, comment and share on the directory and give away social media giveaways.

Winners will be contacted by email and will have 10 days to claim their prize. All winners will be announced on March 4.

WBCUtah is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to help women in Utah build confidence, create opportunity, and experience success as business owners. The organization is funded in part by a cooperative agreement with the US Small Business Administration.

WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will allow users to search for nearby businesses directly from the app. Users will see an area with subcategories like Photographs, Movies, and Documents while searching for something on the app. A second part will present the neighboring businesses such as restaurants, grocery stores and other services.

The “Business Directory” feature was first reported by WABetaInfo when it was made available to some users in So Paulo, Brazil, and is expected to be made available to more users in other locations in the near future. Users will benefit from the feature as it allows them to search for local businesses and then contact them directly through the app.

This feature is most likely intended to facilitate purchases through WhatsApp, which already has its own payment mechanism through UPI in places like India. Users will be able to search for nearby stores, restaurants and other businesses, communicate with their respective WhatsApp Business accounts, choose from a catalog of products and services, and pay directly from the app, all without ever leaving WhatsApp.

The feature is still not available in Pakistan and there are currently no estimates of its availability. More information on planned additions, such as new business directory functionality, should be available in early 2022.

As of this writing, India has more than 622 million active internet users, almost half of which reside in rural areas. In fact, with 35% annual growth in 2018, rural India has surpassed its smarter urban counterpart in smartphone and internet adoption. Based on this, and the fact that data plan prices have fallen steadily since 2013, some experts estimate that the number of monthly active internet users will reach over 900 million by 2025. That’s 900 million people who rely on mainly use the Internet to communicate with each other, access content for entertainment and share their thoughts on social networks. This brings us to an app that for many has become synonymous with everyday communication and entertainment – WhatsApp.

Launched in 2010, WhatsApp is among the most popular apps in India, with the country being its biggest market. While the app has over 5 billion downloads globally, it was on track to hit over 500 million downloads in India in January 2021. And this despite controversy over its privacy policies. Since then, the app has launched end-to-end encryption, new privacy features that allow you to hide your information from specific contacts, and an aggressive advertising campaign to remind users that their data is safe.

So what’s at stake here?

In a recent report by Wabetainfo, it was revealed that WhatsApp is testing its newest business directory feature, which has already been rolled out in beta in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This feature works like the old-school Yellow Pages (or not-so-old-school Justdial) would – you can find businesses that offer a range of services near you. While this may be great news for customers looking for services or products, it may negate privacy features as we currently know them.

Let’s break down a scenario

Let’s say you’re new to town and need to know more about service providers near you. You allow WhatsApp to access your location – pretty harmless, isn’t it? The app, after all, needs to know where you are to tell you what’s near you. Now you can use the app to get in touch with businesses near you, message suppliers directly, and check for updates on deliveries. If you’ve set up your UPI account on WhatsApp, you can even pay vendors directly through the app. Super practical.

But what happens when local sellers start competing for your attention? They post targeted ads on Facebook that link to WhatsApp, or they create ads that run on Facebook through the interface of WhatsApp itself. If they wait a few months, they will also be able to run ads on WhatsApp through the Status feature (which has a swipe feature similar to Instagram Stories). These status ads will be served in the same way as targeted ads. This is where the violation of privacy can begin.

Let's break down a scenario

What are targeted ads and how do they work?

Simply put, targeted ads are created based on your demographics, online behaviors, and shopping habits to expose you to products and services that you might like. When a targeted advertisement is created, advertisers enter data related to your age, spending ability, location, previous purchases, values, etc. Platforms like Facebook then cross-reference this data with user data to ensure ads are shown to the right people. Intrinsically, this requires some breach of privacy (which legally can sometimes be a gray area based on privacy policies and app permissions).

What does this have to do with WhatsApp’s business directory feature?

Online directories derive their revenue from two main sources. The first is to entice a supplier to list in the directory and pay a monthly fee, and the second is to sell advertising space or the promise of greater exposure to suppliers who have already signed up. The first represents a limited earning capacity, while the second can be unlimited. This is what makes ad revenue so lucrative, and ultimately a priority for these platforms. However, in order to promise exposure and deliver the same, platforms like WhatsApp Business Directory will need access to user data to show them the right ads.

The rapid penetration of smartphones and the internet in the country has led to an equally rapid digitization of businesses. As the IT industry represents billions of dollars in potential revenue, almost any business is likely to generate revenue by incorporating digital commerce into their business model, whether that be selling online through a website or simply chatting with customers. customers on WhatsApp.

According to the MGI Digital India report, we will see new economic sectors such as agriculture, logistics, jobs and skills, and education digitize rapidly, creating not only new jobs but also new businesses to explore for consumers. Ultimately, this will lead to fierce competition within the digital stratosphere, with a heavy reliance on targeted advertisements and a large budget to purchase Big Data.

What does this have to do with WhatsApp's business directory feature?

So where is the average consumer?

As mentioned earlier, the widespread internet adoption in India is currently driven by rural sectors, with new smartphones and data plans being purchased in greater volume in low-income states. Internet consumption patterns in these low-income states mirror the patterns seen in urban areas – most people seek entertainment, communication, and social media when using the Internet. Moreover, 90% of rural users with internet access are also daily users (in urban areas the number is 94% – a tiny difference).

Most brands have saturated Tier 1 markets and are looking to enter Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets to improve their reach, expand their customer base, and increase revenue. Therefore, rural customer data is much more valuable today than urban customer data. It is also in short supply. This creates the perfect environment for tech companies like WhatsApp to not only grow their user base, but also gain access to valuable data that can be exploited by others.

Sound familiar? Facebook enabled Cambridge Analytica to collect data from 87 million users worldwide. The platform had to pay a hefty $5 billion fine and reform its privacy policies after the scandal broke in 2018. But we still see targeted ads today and it’s not a source of revenue that government officials are likely to remove altogether.

So where is the average consumer?

Besides the ease of possibly extracting data from rural populations where there is little or no awareness of consumer rights and data privacy, we could even see the platform accessing children’s data, with more and more more kids owning smartphones these days. Recently, Apple and Google banned more than 8 Lakh apps from App Store and PlayStore because they lacked privacy policies. Of these, the majority of apps were aimed at children up to 12 years old. It is fair to say that data on children is just as valuable due to its sparseness as data on the rural population. Both represent largely untapped markets for brands.

It’s critical that governments look at the new WhatsApp Business Directory feature and the ability to serve ads through trained eyes on the horizon and not just the bottom line. We can’t even begin to see the ripple effects of allowing tech giants access to data. With the rise of AI and machine learning products and consumption becoming the norm, we are likely to be viewed as a collection of statistics rather than individuals. This is where things get really dark.

WhatsApp has started testing a new feature in São Paulo, Brazil, which allows its users to discover local businesses without having to leave the confines of the popular messaging platform.

Reuters reports that WhatsApp plans to highlight “thousands of businesses in categories such as food, retail and local services in selected neighborhoods of São Paulo” and that the Vice President of Business Messaging of Facebook’s Matt Idema said India and Indonesia could get the next feature.

“I am delighted that we are starting to pilot a directory of local businesses within @WhatsApp“said Will Cathcart, CEO of WhatsApp, in a Tweeter referencing the Reuters report. “It will help you find and connect with local businesses, like your neighborhood cafe, florist, clothing store and more.”

WhatsApp hasn’t been shy about wanting to attract more businesses. He created the WhatsApp Business API to offer “a better way to connect with customers”, for example, and the WhatsApp Business app purportedly “allows you to personally connect with your customers, showcase your products and services and answer their questions throughout their buying experience.”

But the expansion to include more business-to-consumer interactions has not been without its downsides. The most controversial move was a change to WhatsApp’s privacy policy intended to allow Facebook to retain information about conversations between businesses and consumers.

Recommended by our editors

To say that the introduction of this new policy went badly would be an understatement. Many users of the platform were concerned that Facebook wanted to access their private conversations, and even if that was not the case, the German privacy regulator also objected to the new policy. After threatening to limit account functionality for those who did not agree to the new privacy policy, he backtracked in May.

Black business owners in Gainesville and surrounding towns can use a platform to reach more consumers to support their products and services.

Gainesville Black Professionals this month launched its “Minority Business Directory” which features more than 100 companies in various industries including real estate, apparel, beauty, food, fitness, finance, health and more.

Virginia Grant, executive director of GBP, said she has seen an increase in the number of companies added to the website since its launch on August 5.

“I’ve seen an increase in subscriptions and an increase in website traffic,” Grant said. “It certainly piqued the interest of our community.”

Grant, who established GBP in March 2016 to feature professionals from all segments of Gainesville and Alachua County in hopes that lasting business relationships will be formed, said the directory’s goal is to foster equality and economic opportunity by closing the equity gap within the community. . The non-profit organization has in the past organized the GBP Movers & Shakers gala, published two annual editions of “Synergy” magazine, which aims to recognize and give more visibility to African-American professionals in North Central Florida, and held several leadership workshops and discussions with community leaders on social and health disparities in Gainesville and Alachua County.

Grant said it’s important to partner with small businesses for the directory to ensure they get the exposure and marketing they need.

“It’s advantageous because small business owners don’t have a large advertising budget,” Grant said. “It’s important that people know about your business to grow your business. The more consumers know, the more money can stay in our community. This keeps money flowing longer.”

Grant said the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota in May sparked a desire among local consumers and business owners to support Black-owned businesses.

With the help of Feathr employees, Grant’s vision of a GBP directory came to fruition.

Feathr is a software company founded in 2012 that provides digital marketing tools for events and associations.

“It was helpful to me because they handled the tech side,” Grant said. “If you have a vision, you need people to help you achieve it.”

Taylor Spangler, director of customer education for Feathr for over a year, along with her husband Thomas Storey, director of engineering for Feathr for over four years, helped with hypertext markup language (html) and Directory encoding on the GBP website.

Spangler said being able to use the resource was his primary motivation.

“We encourage people to submit their information,” Spangler said. “I think this is a really good opportunity for consumers and businesses in the community.”

Storey said he was lucky to be part of the project to help local small businesses attract more customers.

“I’m glad I was able to help out and allow people to use it,” Storey said. “It’s great to show off the great companies in our city.”

Tara Crawford-James, owner of Tara J Weddings, is one of many companies in the directory.

Crawford-James founded his company in 2006 and specializes in event planning for weddings, graduations and baby showers.

She also provides decorations and chair and table rentals for anyone who needs them.

Crawford-James said Grant reached out to her and asked if she wanted to be in the yearbook.

“I think it’s good, especially for reaching more people online,” Crawford-James said. “During the pandemic, it is difficult for us to network. This is the perfect time to release this.

The directory is free for business owners.

GBP will host a small business marketing webinar on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
