Tumblr launches paid membership for ad-free browsing

Tumblr has just launched a new subscription for users who want to get rid of ads on its platform. The first microblogging site put ads in 2012 although site founder David Karp said in 2010 that Tumblr was “rather averse to advertising”.

The ad-free subscription plan costs $4.99 (~RM21) per month or $39.99 (~RM168) per year. Once you sign up, you can enjoy ad-free browsing on its desktop site and mobile app, but payment can only be made through desktop for now, as Tumblr says it’s working always on checkout process for iOS and Android.

Keep in mind, however, that the company has stated that even with the subscription, you’ll still see sponsored posts from creators, as well as logo takeovers. This is the same way that YouTube Premium cannot prevent its creators from creating sponsored videos.

The ad-free browsing package comes shortly after Tumblr added monetization tools for popular bloggers, such as Post+ subscriptions and the ability for users to point their favorite blogs. Twitter has a similar paid subscription called Twitter Blue which provides access to exclusive features but doesn’t remove ads, but again it only costs a fraction of Tumblr.
